Freddy Martin was the leader of one of the big band era’s most popular ‘Sweet’ bands. He earned his nickname ‘Mr. Silvertone’ for his smooth tenor sax style.
Featuring pianist Jack Fina and several vocalists including Terry Shand, Russ Morgan, Elmer Feldkamp, Glen Hughes, Eddie Stone, Clyde Rogers, Stuart Wade, Bob Haymes and Merv Griffin, the Martin Orchestra recorded over 85 hits including the #1 recordings of ‘I Saw the Stars’ (1934), ‘Piano Concerto in B Flat’ (1941), ‘Rose O’Day (The Filla-Do-Gusha Song)’ (1942), ‘Symphony’ (1945), ‘To Each His Own’ (1946) and ‘Managua, Nicaragua’ (1947).
Freddy Martin died on October 1, 1983.
